Impressionist Landscape in Oil: Lavender

This is a painting demonstration for more advanced painters showing how to paint an impressionist style landscape. It assumes that you are comfortable with colour mixing and that you have already created landscape paintings. There is no under-painting in this video and the painting is made 'alla prima' or painting wet on wet.

This is a short demo based on a painting exercise that I taught in an impressionist style.  The aim is to paint in a loose style.  The focus is not on details but on the large shapes and how they are created with colour and tone.  In Part 2  I will add a second layer of colour that will focus on the warm and cool colours to accentuate the feeling of sunlight.

block-in

The canvas is toned with burnt sienna. The composition is roughly blocked in

The large shapes are blocked in using broad brushstrokes.

progression

Colour is progressively added and the composition starts to emerge.

finished

The finished painting. Notice that the brightest and lightest colours are added towards the end of the painting process.
